Retainers

Retention is the most important stage of orthodontic treatment. A retainer helps to keep your teeth straight after all your hard work during treatment. We provide custom retainers to all our patients at Northern Orthodontics.

Types of retainers

Retainers come in two forms: fixed retainers and removable retainers.

Fixed retainers

Also called bonded or permanent retainers, fixed retainers are thin wires attached to the inside of the front teeth to hide them away from sight.

Despite the safety of fixed retainers, they should be periodically examined by our office or by your dentist to ensure they are working properly and that no plaque has built up around your appliance.

It is also possible for a fixed retainer to break as a result of active teeth movement. If this happens to you, please contact us right away for a replacement.

Types of retainers

Removable retainers

Removable retainers are very similar to Invisalign® clear aligners. At Northern Orthodontics, we use Essix removable retainers.

You should wear your retainers day and night at first, and then move to nighttime-only wear when Dr Mojtaba recommends it. You will wear your retainers for at least 1-2 years - although it’s best to wear them long-term, as teeth can move throughout your lifetime.

Every custom treatment at Northern Orthodontics comes with three retainer check appointments that are absolutely free of charge.

Extra review sessions to check that your retainers are working properly can be arranged for you if you would like to be seen more frequently than every six months. These sessions cost £25 each.
